Why Think That? A Guide to Making Moral & Intellectual Progress
www.whythinkthat.com
This is the beginnings of a webpage for a book I am writing called "Why Think That? A Guide to Making Moral & Intellectual Progress." I am writing a short book on critical thinking in ethics that will be geared towards students, faculty outside philosophy (especially the sciences) and, in theory, the "general reader" who wants to improve his or her skills at identifying and evaluating the reasons given for and against various moral views. The main "method" developed in this book involves asking these two questions:
1. What do you mean? 2. Why think that?
My book is designed to rival Anthony Weston's "Rulebook for Arguments" (Hackett) book both in cost and scope. It will be somewhat similar in approach to Richard Feldman's "Reason and Argument" (Prentice Hall) text, but will be much shorter, more of a handbook.
While the focus will be reasoning in ethics (and other topics in philosophy), I hope to use this webpage to build up resources for using the book in other fields.
If you have *any* thoughts on what you would like to see in a short book on critical reasoning, please email them to me. I'd be happy to hear them and improve my book accordingly!
In the meantime, here are the URLs for number of handouts that give some picture of what my book will be like; just cut and paste the (complete) link into your browser to see more:
"How to reason better":

I hope to update this page as I make progress on the book. In the meantime, I invite any correspondence.
